honestly the moment i stopped thinking about asoiaf as trying to be historical fiction and realized that grrm still writes like a scifi writer, my understanding of how everything in the series works meta-wise improved significantly.

like think about it. scifi as a genre is about making criticisms of current modern culture, but placed in a futuristic time period in order to take modern concepts and take them to their most extreme examples in order to emphasize them & say something about them. is a song of ice and fire not doing the same thing of taking modern criticisms and placing them in a different time period, just backwards in time instead of forwards?

yes a huge amount isn't historically accurate, but he isn't trying to be. he's making commentary on modern society with a veneer of the medieval!

Hello! I wanted to ask o saw a few asks that had rumblings of not completing your comic to its desired end. I stopped reading WN for a while last year and have just now come back to it recently for a reread. Mental health, y'know. I saw the post that said the hiatus was ending in December, did I miss something important or did I just sleeping beauty my way through most of a large hiatus?

Neither--Arc 1 ended in 2023, and I've been doing some shorter comics ever since, which was always the plan. Some of it is setup for Arc 2 (there's a significant passage of time between the two arcs) and some of it's just stories I want to tell.

The most recent short comic finished in September and I'm taking a break to give my drawing arm a rest and because, frankly, I need a break! I haven't taken a real hiatus in WN's entire run. Turns out if you do the same thing for a decade plus without stopping you will eventually burn out, even if it's something you love and you're going really slowly at it.

There may or may not be more short hiatuses between comics in the future, as I'm in the process of learning that I NEED to stop sometimes, regardless of what I WANT. I'm not in a hurry to get to WN's end anyway, I'm not sure what I'd do without it in my life.

The discourse about unfinished webcomics came from somewhere else, it's unrelated. I just have a personal pet peeve with the idea that a work is pointless if it's not finished.

Books of 2024: What I'd Like To Read By The End Of The Year.

I was feeling ~Whelmed~ over the weekend about all the things I still want to read, and I thought to myself, "Gee Why Is That??", so I pulled everything off my shelf and stacked it up basically in the order I'd like to read it and then went "....ah I see, carry on."

Now this stack WOULD be fine, except everything from ALWAYS COMING HOME down through HOUSE OF LEAVES is stuff I'd like to read adjacent to writing projects, namely: 1. IN BETWEEN (which I'm working on now but need to wrap up by the end of August) and then 2. NANO (which, y'know. Starts on November 1). So the sixteen (16) books between ACH and HOL are for the next three (3) months, and then I'll come back for the side-leaners during/after NaNo, I think.

(Not pictured in this stack is STARLING HOUSE, which I don't have in hand yet but will also be a NaNo Prep book!)

Basically my plan is to read down through this stack in this order and see how long it takes me! I finally got set up with my coworking space today, so hopefully I'll be writing late a couple nights a week starting. tomorrow. Which. will eat into reading time pretty significantly, hopefully.

But there's so much cool stuff I want to read! And write! And knit!! You see why I'm having A Time, huh.
